GENTLENESS- Fruit of the Spirit

“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

Gentleness is defined as the quality of being kind hearted, tender and mild. Often people misunderstand being gentle is a weakness or being passive. But true gentleness according to the Bible requires great strength and it is an active process. God wants us to be gentle to others. Jesus Himself tells us not to resist an evil person, instead if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. This is not an easy task at all! But that is what the Bible demands.

The best example of gentleness was exhibited and taught to us by Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11:29, Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus did not come to condemn our sins, but He came to demonstrate His gentle kindness and compassionate love towards us. His gentleness towards mankind was so evident through His ministry. Jesus(The Holy One) showed His readiness and acceptance to allow sinners(us) to come closer to Him for forgiveness, blessings and healing. Today, are we ready to accept our fellow people with their shortcomings and are we able to generously forgive others?

We always need to acknowledge the numerous times God has been so gentle to us despite our sinful nature. Gentleness requires humility; it demands a forgiving heart and forbearance. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we must earnestly seek to incorporate gentleness in our daily lives. Let the Spirit of God lead us through the path of being gentle to others reflecting His character. Amen!
