WATCH YOUR WORDS

“For, he who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.” 1 Peter 3:10

Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Many scriptures in the Bible, teach us how to use our tongue. Our speech reveals our personality. The tongue of a Christian is an indicator of his spiritual health. A ‘word’ is so much powerful that, it can either be used as a weapon to harm and destroy, or as a tool to heal and build. The words we speak become the house we live in.

Words make worlds! Words have the power to create things. In the beginning God created the world through His Word. And today, His Word of gospel, has created a Christian being in us. In the book of James chapter 3, he describes the power of tongue using illustrations and metaphors. James points out a horse’s bit, a ship’s rudder and a forest fire- all three are small things that control large objects. Likewise our tongue, a small member of the body, has the controlling influence on the whole body. He also mentions that, mankind controls and tames every beast and creatures on earth, but no man can tame his own tongue; for it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. This tells us how important it is to tame our tongue and be watchful over our words. The words we use to speak with people are interconnected to the way we believe in God. Our speech to Him and to the people around us, both are forms of worship. Blessings and curses cannot spring from the same well.

As the Scripture says, it is indeed impossible for us to tame our tongue with our human nature. But when we confess our destructive speeches and repent, our Father in heaven forgives us; and when we behold the life of Jesus Christ as a template, and walk in His ways, our words will begin to give forth life. Above all, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, He empowers our tongue that we may reveal God’s glory and mysteries. Let us submit the words of our mouth, to be tamed by God, so that our words are fruitful and our tongue be a tree of life. Amen!
