“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12
A clothing provides protection, insulation from weather and denotes modesty. Our clothing is the first thing noted by others. Most of the times, what we wear allows people to judge who we are. Sometimes, it represents our culture and where we belong.
According to the Bible, clothing is a gift from God. After the fall of mankind, when they realized their nakedness, God clothed them. Clothing takes a special significance in the Bible. After the invasion of sin, man couldn’t come before God without a clothing; there was a sacrifice made for their clothes. In the book of Isaiah 61:10, we read “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” Yes, with our sinful attire, it is impossible to come before the presence of God. It is only through the blood of Jesus Christ, and the gift of His salvation, we come before Him. This gift of clothing, reveals the very nature of God, who sent His Son as a sacrifice when we were still in shameful and sinful condition and covered us with righteousness.
A greater price is paid for our garments of salvation. Hence, it is very important how we clothe ourselves. As we read in Colossians 3, let us get rid of filthy clothes that are sinful and demeaning such as anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, lust, evil desires and greed. But put on clothes of salvation and garments of praise; let us show the world our compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
