“The Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, and are careful to observe them!” Deuteronomy 28:13
Christian life begins with obedience to God’s words. It is the key to God’s blessings in our lives. God’s plan for us, is to prosper us and not to harm; so when we listen to His voice and walk in the path He has set before us, we will reap its benefits. God’s promises and blessings always comes with a cost of obedience to His commandments.
Obedience is an attitude of submission to an instruction, and not holding back with our desires. This attitude builds our character and determines our lifestyle. Abraham’s prompt obedience through his entire life, demonstrates his reverence and trust in God. Obedience comes with faith; for we ought to walk by faith and not by sight. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Wholehearted obedience to God’s commandments is a worship raised unto Him. For the Bible says in 1 Samuel 15:22, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” In the Old Testament days, sacrifice is considered as the only way to show their devotion and to reconcile with God. Yet, it became a ritual and had nothing to do with their hearts. God is not pleased with our outward sacrifices, but expects a wholehearted devotion and obedience to His words.
Even in the New Testament, the aspect of obedience is greatly appreciated and emphasized. Jesus is the greatest example. In Philippians 2:8, we read, Jesus humbled Himself by becoming obedient even to the point of death. Hebrews 5:8 says, He learned obedience, by the things which He suffered; and when we obey Him, we become the partakers of His salvation. Obedience is a choice that we must make and cultivate in our daily lives. God’s commandments aren’t burdensome, as His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He is a faithful God and delights in our obedience to Him. Throughout the Bible, God reminds us that, obedience brings blessings in our lives. Let the Holy Spirit help us to be obedient to God’s commandments. Amen!
