“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding.” Proverbs 3:13
Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding. We are familiar with the passage from 1Kings chapter 3, where Solomon requests God to grant him wisdom and discerning heart. He knew that only with God’s wisdom, he can navigate successfully through his kingship. The book of Proverbs is also referred as the ‘Wisdom of Solomon’; and the foundation of this book is, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” and “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.”
Proverbs 2:7 says, “He stored up sound wisdom for the upright.” For those who walk righteously before God, He causes them to inherit the stored wealth. Solomon says to cry out for discernment and lift up our voices for wisdom; for he who asks shall receive. The Word of God is True Wisdom. The Bible says, “Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens.”(Proverbs 8:19) According to John 1, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, full of grace and truth. Jesus is the Wisdom personified! Paul in 1Corinthians 1:30 says, Christ Jesus became the wisdom from God, for us.
Again, in 1Corinthians 2 we read that, the spiritual hidden wisdom is the Spirit of God. Paul says, we do not speak with worldly wisdom, but with the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by Him. Words of wisdom and words of knowledge are the spiritual gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit. God-given wisdom is divine, and it comes by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that God, not only gives us wisdom when we seek, but also gives it generously. Without His wisdom, we cannot see what God has in store for us. We can obtain wisdom, by reading and meditating on the Words of God, by following the steps of Jesus Christ, and through prayers and thirst for the Holy Spirit.
