GREAT GAIN

“Godliness with contentment is great gain.” - 1Timothy 6:6.

Contentment is a state of happiness and satisfaction. They say, contentment doesn’t come by adding to what you have, but by subtracting from what you desire. It doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t desire for anything, but to be thankful for everything that we have and being patient on God, for things yet to come.

Godly contentment comes from trusting in God’s promised provision. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’.” Many people think that life is a race, and we have to be the best at everything; a fancier car, bigger house, a better- earning job, and more money. The moment one thing is achieved, the race for the next begins. Rarely, we pause for sometime and be grateful for the things we’ve achieved. Often this ambitiousness becomes greed. Paul says in 1Timothy 6, ‘but those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires and lusts, that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money, is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from their faith and pierced themselves through, with many sorrows.’

Our contentment should not be affected by our circumstances, instead be rooted firmly in the good news of Christ. For Jesus Himself said, ‘Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about it’s own things....For your Heavenly Father knows what you need.’ In order to experience the essence of contentment in our lives, we first need to practice gratitude. The more thankful we are today, the more happier we will be. Godly contentment brings happiness, peace, joy, simplicity, humility and love for others. As the Bible says, where our treasures are, there is our heart; let our treasures be stored in heaven and our hearts always lifted up to God, with praise and thanksgiving. Yes, Godliness with contentment is a great gain!
